ACCREDITATION

  • Accreditation is an introductory session that ensures all members are comfortable handling KPC equipment, aware of potential wind and water conditions, and prepared for self rescue in unforeseen circumstances.
  • You must complete a yearly accreditation on each boat/board you would like to use. Complete an accreditation in August/September to be able to paddle in the spring of the following year.
  • Instructors must be confident you and your equipment will be safe when paddling alone and that you are able to complete the following tasks on each type of boat/board you will paddle:
    • determine what is KPC equipment and what is private equipment
    • carry the boat/board to and from storage without damage or stress on the equipment
    • select the correct size paddle and PFD for yourself
    • mount your boat/board and paddle forwards, backwards and draw yourself sideways
    • fall off your boat/board (huli) and remount in deep water without help
  • Accreditation can be completed at the end of any Learn to Paddle class.

*Only adult members are required to be accredited. Children 15 and older may join adult classes, but must paddle with an adult if under 18.

In the Spring and Fall, the water is a bit cooler and the wind can be chilly. You should always choose tighter fitting clothing in case of the unlikely event that you ‘huli’ (fall into the water) as it will be easier for swimming. Generally most paddlers wear a lightweight thermal long sleeve shirt, a windbreaker (same as used for running or skiing) under their PFD along with spandex or wetsuit pants and neoprene booties (knee length are best for wading deeper into the water to get in the boat). Dry suits, dry pants and tops are also an option. Adding a warm hat and neoprene gloves help during the winter months keeping in mind that the thinner more flexible option is best.

In the Summer the same principles apply with regards to being able to swim in your clothing, usually lightweight shorts or spandex, and a t-shirt or tank top. Most paddlers go barefoot in the boats and on boards, but will wear flip flops while walking around the site. You are welcome to wear water shoes or booties if you choose. We always recommend that you choose bright clothing that is visible on the lake as a safety precaution and always have your PFD.

SAFETY

  • You must always sign in before you go out on the water and sign out once you return so we know where you are going and about what time you will return.
  • You must wear a PFD and a leash at all times while on the water.
  • It is a good idea to wear bright colours so boaters and other people can easily see you.
  • Understand your abilities. When paddling alone, always stay close enough to shore so you can swim back if you get injured or your equipment fails. Ask our staff for advice if you haven’t had much paddling experience.
  • Try not to put others at risk to save you. Do not put yourself at risk trying to save others.

If it’s a life-threatening situation, CALL 911.

If a member fails to return within 15 minutes after their scheduled return time we will:

  • first ask people at KPC if anyone has seen this member;
  • next call the contact numbers for this person;
  • if not found, we will notify the authorities who will take over the search from there.

If an emergency situation occurs on land:

  • alert a staff member who will assess the situation and react accordingly.
  • the staff member will then decide the proper protocol to follow, whether that be to administer first aid or call the authorities.

EQUIPMENT

KPC offers boats and boards to accommodate all skill levels — from beginners to intermediate paddlers. Our range of equipment allows us to offer introductory classes for new paddlers as well as attend races and play in big waves.

Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP)

  • A variety of SUPs are available — the best one for you will depend on your size and abilities.
    • All-around SUPs are an easy and fun way to start paddling.
    • Racing/Touring SUPs: It is expected that you can paddle consistently without hitting the board with your paddle before you try using the racing/touring boards.

Surfski Kayaks

  • Surfskis are a sit-on-top kayak that are self-draining so they will not fill with water if you capsize or paddle in waves.
  • They are built for waves so they perform very well on wavy days.
  • Epic surfskis (generally used for larger people) and Think surfskis (generally used for smaller people) are available.

Outrigger Canoes

  • Outrigger canoes are a Polynesian traditional boat that have a wide range of culture to them.
  • Originally built to travel between Polynesian islands, outrigger canoes, like  surfskis, perform well on wavy days.
  • 6 and 12-person outrigger canoes are the easiest way to get out paddling without getting too wet or being left behind.

KPC equipment is more delicate than the average beginner boat/ board.

Our boats and boards are lighter and cause less stress to the body for prolonged use. Surfski kayaks and outrigger canoes range between $4,000.00 – $8,000.00 and repairs are often costly, so please consider the following when using our boats:

  • Use care when taking out equipment to not hit anything with the boats while on land and in the water.
  • Set boats down gently. Ask for help if you are struggling to carry your boat or board alone.
  • Offer help to others if they appear to be struggling to carry their equipment.
  • When going into the water, keep yourself between the boat/board and the shore, and walk in till you are knee deep to avoid pushing the rudders into the ground and damaging them.
  • Avoid putting your boat/board on the sand. Try to walk directly from the grass to the water and take a moment to catch your breath before lifting your boat from the water to return it to the rack or onto the grass.
  • Rinse all sand and debris from your equipment before returning it to its storage location.
