New to Paddling?

Kelowna Paddle Centre provides programs for the general public as well as membership options for all ages and abilities.

Alternatively KPC offers yearly memberships that start March 1st and end February 28th. Members have access to the paddle centre, change rooms, showers, boat storage and club equipment from sunrise to sunset. Membership includes introductory classes, technical lessons and group training sessions in Outrigger Canoe, Surfski Kayaks and on Stand Up Paddleboards. Club equipment is available for all members, once introductory classes have been completed, which includes Outrigger Canoes, Surfski Kayaks and Stand Up Paddle boards, as well as life jackets (PFD) and paddles. Members are able to bring friends and family as guests as per our guest policy and safety guidelines. To sign up for member programs log into MINDBODY.


What is Accreditation?


Accreditation is to ensure that all paddlers who are members (or guests) of KPC are comfortable with handing of club equipment, aware of potential wind & water conditions, and are prepared for self rescue in unforeseen circumstances. To become accredited you will need to complete the following tasks:

  1. Be able to determine what is club equipment and what is private equipment.
  2. Carry the boat/ board to and from storage without damage or stress on the boat/board.
  3. Select the correct size paddle and PFD (Personal Flotation Device)  for yourself.
  4. Successfully mount your boat/ board and be able to paddle forwards, backwards and be able to draw yourself sideways.
  5. Fall off of your boat/ board (huli) and be able to remount in deep water without any help.

If you are prepared to go in the cold water to prove your readiness to use club equipment you can contact the manager to book a time to complete the accreditation process. Alternatively, you can register for an Introductory class in June, and have the opportunity to complete your accreditation at the end of the class.

What to wear?


In the Spring and Fall, the water is a bit cooler and the wind can be chilly. You should always choose tighter fitting clothing in case of the unlikely event that you ‘huli’ (fall into the water) as it will be easier for swimming. Generally most paddlers wear a lightweight thermal long sleeve shirt, a windbreaker (same as used for running or skiing) under their PFD along with spandex or wetsuit pants and neoprene booties (knee length are best for wading deeper into the water to get in the boat). Dry suits, dry pants and tops are also an option. Adding a warm hat and neoprene gloves help during the winter months keeping in mind that the thinner more flexible option is best.

In the Summer the same principles apply with regards to being able to swim in your clothing, usually lightweight shorts or spandex, and a t-shirt or tank top. Most paddlers go barefoot in the boats and on boards, but will wear flip flops while walking around the site. You are welcome to wear water shoes or booties if you choose. We always recommend that you choose bright clothing that is visible on the lake as a safety precaution and always have your PFD.
